Forget everything you think you know about Kazakhstan. This is a completely different side of the country. Welcome to the first XXL Soviet Architecture Tour through Almaty.

Almaty is Kazakhstan's largest city and former capital, best known for its mountain backdrop, skiing and vibrant atmosphere. But behind that image lies one of the most remarkable collections of Soviet architecture I have ever explored.
Over three days, I walked across the city to discover monumental housing estates, futuristic public buildings, hidden mosaics, Soviet metro stations and late Soviet modernist landmarks. What impressed me most is how much of this architecture has survived. Unlike many other former Soviet cities, Almaty still preserves an extraordinary collection of buildings that continue to define its urban landscape today.
Join me on my first XXL Soviet Architecture Tour through Almaty.
