Title: Quality Control Test Methods for Calcined Clay in Industry

The adoption of calcined clays in low-carbon blended cements has gained significant industrial interest. However, existing reactivity tests such as lime reactivity and R3 require several days and are unsuitable for rapid quality control in industrial settings. This presentation addresses this limitation by proposing the methylene blue (MB) spot test as a simple and rapid method for assessing the reactivity of kaolinitic clays. The degree of conversion of kaolinite to metakaolinite can be effectively captured through changes in the MB value upon calcination. A reduction of less than 50% indicates under-calcination, while a reduction between 50–75% corresponds to properly calcined clays with maximum reactivity. Reductions exceeding 80% indicate over-calcination, leading to reduced reactivity. Calibration using the same clay source further improves accuracy. The proposed approach provides a practical, low-cost pathway for rapid industrial quality control of calcined clays.
