Built to bypass the Roanoke River's dangerous Roanoke Rapids, hand-cut stone Chockoyotte Creek Aqueduct, was essential in moving bateaux, the 19th century canal boats, along North Carolina's historic Roanoke Canal

Built in 1820 and considered one of the finest examples of 19th century canal construction, this amazing, Industrial Revolution feat of civil engineering served canal boats, laden with cargo, pulled by enslaved boat crews, for decades, before the canal was enlarged and repurposed as a power canal, powering mills and hydroelectric plants, before finally being drained in the early 20th century.

Join me as I explore this historic structure and learn about its evolution over the last two centuries.
