????️ Today I’m in Ipswich, Suffolk, taking a closer look at Jackson Civil Engineering, based at 30 White House Road on the Whitehouse Industrial Estate.
Jackson is the largest part of One Group Construction, a group of construction and logistics-related businesses operating across the UK.
During the audit, I spoke with a couple of members of staff and learned a little more about the company, its history and the type of work it carries out. Jackson has grown into a substantial civil engineering operation, with around 350 employees and seven offices across England.
⚛️ There’s also an interesting local connection. Jackson Civil Engineering has been involved with work connected to Sizewell C, the huge new nuclear power station currently under construction on the Suffolk coast. Sizewell C itself has confirmed contracts involving Ipswich-based Jackson Civil Engineering, while Jackson personnel have also recently participated in community projects involving Sizewell C contractors.
But while taking a look around the Ipswich site, something else caught my attention… ????????
There were CCTV cameras clearly visible on the building, but despite looking around the publicly accessible areas and approaches, I couldn't find any corresponding CCTV signage.
That raises an important question around data protection and transparency.
⚖️ Where CCTV captures identifiable individuals, that footage can constitute personal data and its processing falls within the framework of the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018. Appropriate transparency is therefore an important part of operating a surveillance system.
Rather than simply pointing out the issue and moving on, I’ve now written directly to the company's Data Protection Officer (DPO) to raise what I observed and ask whether the CCTV arrangements can be reviewed.
I've made clear that I'm perfectly willing to accept this may simply be an oversight. If signage is missing, hopefully it can be corrected quickly and without any fuss. ????
???? The email has been sent.
Now we wait to see how One Group Construction/Jackson responds.
This is exactly what these audits are about: observing what is publicly visible, identifying potential issues, asking reasonable questions and then giving organisations the opportunity to respond and, where necessary, put things right.
???? To finish the visit, I put the drone up for an aerial look at the site, giving us a completely different perspective on Jackson's Ipswich operation.
