China’s Lanying R6000 is a six-ton uncrewed aircraft designed to lift off vertically like a helicopter, then transition toward airplane-style forward flight.
But the most unusual part of the design is what stays still.
Unlike tiltrotors that rotate their entire engine nacelles, the R6000 keeps its engines fixed while the rotor-axis assemblies above them change orientation. That creates a difficult engineering problem involving structural stiffness, lightweight composite construction, power transmission, flight-control integration, synchronized rotor movement, and testing across very different flight conditions.
In this Modus Assembly documentary, we follow the R6000 from major composite structures and airframe assembly through powertrain installation, tilt-system integration, avionics, ground testing, tethered hover, and the continuing transition-test program.
The aircraft has a maximum takeoff weight of about 6,100 kilograms and uses two large three-blade proprotors. Its development also brings together China’s growing civil aviation engine, composite manufacturing, flight-control, and advanced rotorcraft industries.
Rather than treating the R6000 as a finished operational aircraft, this video focuses on what has actually been demonstrated publicly: an engineering-validation prototype moving through progressively more demanding tests.
Modus Assembly explores how unusual machines are manufactured, integrated, tested, and prepared for the real world.
