Have you ever wondered what happens if a crucial column in a building fails, for example, due to a car accident or a gas-related incident. Would the building collapse or remain standing. The sudden failure of a steel column causes displacement.
As the column displaces, beams sag, and after a large plastic rotation, axial forces in the beams increase and activate catenary action, redistributing the load to prevent progressive collapse.
The building's survival depends on the capacity of beam-to-column connections.
Tests have shown that among the seven most commonly used bolted and semi-rigid bolted connections, the 'Flush End Plate' showed the highest load capacity at 161 kN against vertical loads, while the 'Web Cleat' achieved the highest catenary action load capacity at 2568 kN.
