This video tells the story of Henry J. Kaiser, a construction magnate with no shipbuilding experience, who revolutionized the maritime industry to win the Battle of the Atlantic. Faced with German U-boats sinking Allied cargo ships faster than they could be replaced (the average build time was 230 days ), Kaiser shattered centuries of shipbuilding tradition. His two great "heresies" were: replacing slow, laborious riveting with faster electric arc welding ; and introducing parallel production and prefabrication based on the automotive assembly line model. This allowed massive, nearly complete ship sections (like 200-ton engine assemblies) to be built simultaneously off-site and then quickly welded together on the building ways. Kaiser also utilized a diverse workforce of unskilled laborers, including over 40,000 women and African-Americans, training them in specialized tasks in just two weeks. The climax was the construction of the S.S. Robert E. Peary in a record-smashing 4 days, 15 hours, and 29 minutes. This success forced the entire industry to adopt his methods , dropping the national average build time to 42 days. Ultimately, the Kaiser system—which also led to the creation of Kaiser Permanente —produced an industrial tidal wave of three new Liberty ships daily, fundamentally changing the mathematics of the war and proving that "impossible is often just a placeholder" for a solution not yet discovered.
