Mark Zuckerberg is one of the richest and most powerful people in the world, but he is also one of the most controversial. Zuckerberg owns a huge property on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, where he is building a £212 million compound that includes two mansions and an entire village of outhouses. The project, known as ‘Koolau Ranch’, is one of the most ambitious private construction projects in North American history. The compound includes over a dozen buildings, including guest houses, with over 30 bedrooms and bathrooms. The compound includes an underground tunnel between the two mansions and a 5,000 sq ft underground bunker. The shelter features living and sleeping space, a mechanical equipment room, and an ‘escape hatch’. The compound is equipped with an extensive network of centrally controlled surveillance cameras and many interior doors operated by key-pad. The compound is self-sufficient, with its own 18ft-high, 55ft-wide water tank and powerful ‘pump system’. The ranch is already producing much of its own food through agriculture and livestock.

But why does Zuckerberg need such a fortress? Is he preparing for the apocalypse? Is he hiding something from the world? Or is he just a paranoid billionaire who wants to isolate himself from the rest of humanity?

The answer is not clear, but what is clear is that Zuckerberg’s plans have caused a lot of trouble and resentment among the local people of Kauai. The property features a mile-long, 6ft-high wall made from volcanic rock, which has destroyed the island’s views of the coast and made visitors feel like prisoners. Nearly everyone who enters the site, including builders, carpenters, and painters, has to sign a strictly worded non-disclosure agreement (NDA) forbidding them from sharing what is going on inside the compound.

The intense security has cost one life, with a security guard assigned to patrol a nearby beach dying of a heart attack while climbing a steep path at the end of his 12-hour shift. The family of the deceased man’s family is suing Zuckerberg, who gave them a cheque for just £5,900 for what they claim was their loved one’s untimely death.

While some local people are pleased by the employment opportunities that the ranch has brought to an island rife with unemployment, a greater number are riled by the heavy-handed intrusion of tech Big Money. Other wealthy celebrities, including Pierce Brosnan, Julia Roberts, Ben Stiller, and Chuck Norris, also have homes there and manage to be far more discreet about their presence.

Zuckerberg has been accused of ‘colonising’ an island where the concept of private property didn’t exist until 1848 and which until 1973 had only one traffic light. In 2021, the Zuckerbergs bought another 600 acres for £41 million, and in 2022, they bought a final 110 acres for £13 million.

Hawaii may be part of the U.S. but as a chain of small islands surrounded by thousands of miles of Pacific Ocean, it’s very isolated — perfect for tech billionaires needing a getaway in the event of a world-collapsing mega-crisis.
