The United States recently marked the one-year anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine by giving $2 billion in weapons to Kyiv and imposing new sanctions on Russia.
The goal of these sanctions is to weaken Russia's ability to engage in war.
President Joe Biden's administration announced the sanctions while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and the G7 nations met to discuss providing more aid.
The sanctions include visa restrictions for Russian military members, freezing assets of allies of President Vladimir Putin, and banning aluminum imports from Russia.
It also limits Russian banking and arms-making activity, and blacklisting Megafon, the country's second largest mobile phone company. However, US officials mentioned that they might add more sanctions in the future. The US government also warned China and other countries not to help Russia avoid the sanctions.
The White House stated that they would impose more sanctions on anyone connected to Russia's defense and technology industry.

The US provided military support and imposed sanctions on Russia, while Ukraine's president promised to fight for victory on the first anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
However, the US aid given to Ukraine didn't include the F-16 fighter jets they wanted.
Some American officials are doubtful that this aid will help to reduce the growing violence on the battlefield before a planned offensive in the spring.
Antonov criticized the new sanctions as "thoughtless" and intended to harm Russia.
He asked if anyone really believed that this was the right way to make Russia change its policies and give up its goal of creating a secure world based on international law and the UN Charter.
In addition, the G7 leaders declared their firm and constant support for Ukraine after their meeting and even talked about the possibility of imposing additional sanctions.
Furthermore, the European Union countries eventually resolved their differences and agreed on a tenth round of sanctions.
The US State Department placed sanctions on various high-ranking Russian government officials, including Cabinet ministers and regional leaders.
Additionally, the US Treasury Department imposed new sanctions on 22 individuals and 83 entities from Russia. These new measures add to the already existing 2,500 sanctions imposed in the past year.
The US will put extra taxes on over 100 Russian metals, minerals, and chemicals, which are worth approximately $2.8 billion.
They also intend to provide $250 million in aid to support Ukraine's energy infrastructure against Russian assaults.
Additionally, Moldova, a neighboring country of Ukraine, will receive $300 million to help them become less reliant on Russia for their energy needs. Authorities have also taken action to charge a Russian citizen for unlawfully exporting counterintelligence gear.
They intend to take possession of Viktor Vekselberg's property, including his $75 million apartment on Park Avenue in New York. Vekselberg is linked to Putin and has already faced sanctions from Washington in 2022.
And despite sanctions damaging Russia's economy, Putin can still finance his conflicts, so officials are targeting those assisting Russia to evade sanctions.
The Treasury department punished over 30 individuals and businesses from Switzerland, Germany, and other countries for assisting Moscow in financing its war against Ukraine.
The Commerce Department also limited exports from almost 90 companies in Russia and other countries, including China, for breaking sanctions and aiding Russia's defense sector.
Additionally, officials are trying to stop parts of Iranian drones from reaching Ukraine's battlefield.
Washington has cautioned that China may be thinking about giving weapons to Russia, but they haven't provided any proof to support this claim.
China has argued that providing more weapons would only make the conflict worse. Meanwhile, the Biden administration has given Ukraine more than $32 billion in military assistance in the past year.
This includes various weapons like anti-armor systems, rocket systems, and drones, as reported by the Defense Department.
Now, a former US Treasury Secretary, Larry Summers, has suggested increasing price caps on Russian energy to make sanctions more effective.
Summers pointed out that economic sanctions on Russia have not had a significant impact because major economies such as China, India, and Turkey have not participated.
