In this episode of the Chesterfield Canal Restoration series, we return to Staveley to see the latest progress on Britain’s newest canal lock. Just one month on from our last visit, there have been some major changes on site — with the lock structure now taking shape and new engineering features becoming visible.
We take a closer look at the construction of the Keith Ayling Lock, including the pumping chamber, control systems, and the surrounding infrastructure that will bring this historic waterway back to life. There are also updates on the wider restoration, including bridge abutments, Bellhouse Basin, and the ongoing challenges of subsidence in this former mining area.
Beyond the main works, we explore a forgotten part of the Chesterfield Canal — the Norbriggs Cutting — an abandoned arm with links to one of Derbyshire’s earliest railways, revealing a very different side to the canal’s history.
This ongoing series documents the full restoration of the Chesterfield Canal, one of the UK’s most ambitious canal restoration projects, combining industrial heritage, civil engineering, and local history.
