A massive hole has appeared at Staveley on the Chesterfield Canal, and in today’s video we explore exactly what’s going on. This huge excavation is the start of the brand-new Keith Ayling Lock being built as part of the ongoing restoration of the Chesterfield Canal and the long-term plan to reconnect the full navigation. This is one of the most significant engineering developments on the canal in years, and it’s creating a lot of interest across Derbyshire, Staveley, and the wider canal restoration community.
I’m joined on site by Steve from Court Above the Cut, as we take a closer look at the construction works, the engineering behind the new lock, and what this means for the future of the Chesterfield Canal. We walk through the site, look at how the groundwork is being carried out, and discuss why this section of the canal is so important to bring back into use.
If you’re interested in British industrial heritage, canal restoration, Chesterfield Canal history, or large-scale civil engineering projects, this video gives you a rare insight into a major development happening right now at Staveley.
