Singapore’s Sewers Now Feed Its Microchips
Fifty-five metres beneath Singapore, wastewater enters a tunnel network stretching roughly 206 kilometres across the island. The Deep Tunnel Sewerage System carries that flow largely by gravity toward Tuas, where wastewater treatment, water recycling, reverse osmosis, and advanced water purification turn part of it into NEWater for industries including semiconductor manufacturing.
Phase 2 required 19 tunnel-boring machines to work beneath roads, rail lines, and a fully functioning city. The finished tunnels descend through carefully engineered gradients toward Tuas, where giant pumps lift the incoming flow before membrane treatment begins separating contaminants at microscopic scale. Much of the resulting NEWater serves industrial users, including wafer-fabrication plants where extremely pure process water is essential.
But this is not simply a story about Singapore water recycling. It is an infrastructure megaproject connecting civil engineering, wastewater treatment, land scarcity, energy recovery, and semiconductor manufacturing through one hidden underground machine. By moving much of the system below ground, Singapore can reduce surface infrastructure, reclaim valuable land, and turn something the city once had to dispose of into a strategic industrial resource.
