Large forest fires have been burning for a week now across almost the entire territory of Turkey. In three provinces where the situation is the most serious – Izmir, Bilecik and Hatay – more than 50,000 people have been evacuated. Hundreds of houses and outbuildings have been damaged. For example, in Izmir alone, 132 residential buildings and one commercial building have burned down or were seriously damaged. In Bilecik – 64 houses, three businesses and 20 outbuildings. In Hatay, dozens of houses have burned down, including in the village of Dogankent. In Seferihisar, the fire has come close to residential areas, where evacuations are underway. The fires in Antakya (Hatay), Seferihisar and Menderes (Izmir), Turgutlu, Ahmetli and Kula (Manisa), Vezirhane (Bilecik), Edremit (Balikesir) have been partially localized. And also in Gaziemir, Bozcaada, Samandağ, Manavgat (Antalya), Sütçüler (İsparta), Kozan (Adana), Düzici (Osmaniye) and a number of other areas.
According to the authorities, most of the fires did not start in forests, but in agricultural lands and gardens, and then spread to forests due to heat and wind. Minister of Agriculture and Forestry İbrahim Yumaklı emphasized that 263 fires in three days are also the result of "irresponsible behavior of citizens." He called on people not to light fires in open areas, not to throw cigarette butts or burn garbage.
More than 25,000 people and a huge amount of ground and air equipment are involved in extinguishing the fires. But despite this, there is no end in sight to the fires and no one knows how to stop them.
